NATO Innovation Fund leads €6 million Series A round in Laki Power to advance grid monitoring, communications and security

  • The round, with continued backing from existing shareholder ReykVC, marks the NATO Innovation Fund’s first investment in Iceland.
  • Laki Power’s patented power-harvesting technology provides up to 300W of power directly from high-voltage lines, up to 100 times more onboard power than conventional inductive solutions. This enables operators to detect ice buildup and wildfire risk, monitor the physical condition and security of the line, and measure how much electricity it can safely carry under prevailing conditions.
  • The investment follows commercial traction with transmission system operators and utilities across Europe, North America and Australia.
The NATO Innovation Fund led Icelandic tech company Laki Power’s €6 million Series A round, with participation from existing shareholder ReykVC. Laki Power’s self-powered monitoring systems for high-voltage transmission lines use one integrated device mounted on the conductor, combining cameras, weather and line sensors, onboard compute and satellite communications. The device draws its energy directly from the powerline, independently from other energy sources. Laki Power’s technology enhances the resilience of power grids in extreme weather conditions, such as cold and wildfires, and enables the monitoring of transmission lines and their direct surroundings, even in uninhabited areas.
Technology powers grid security and resilience
Electricity grids have become both the backbone of modern society and a primary target of physical interference and sabotage. Yet most of the grid remains unobserved between substations, and existing solutions depend on solar or battery power that cannot sustain continuous operation, or harvest limited energy from the line.
Laki Power’s patented technology closes this gap: the LKX-MULTI monitoring station sits directly on a conductor with no need for external power sources. Drawing up to 300W directly from the line, it enables grid operators to run intelligent systems anywhere on the line, rather than relying on more substantial installations.
In addition, it enables new use cases, starting with the LKX-DRONE, which allows drones to recharge along power-line corridors — extending their reach for reconnaissance missions related to security, wildfire and grid operations.

Financing to unlock manufacturing and deployment at scale
The investment will enable Laki Power to scale manufacturing, expand deployments of the company’s flagship product, the LKX-MULTI, with grid operators in Europe, North America and Australia, and accelerate development and distribution of its next-generation platforms, such as the LKX-DRONE.
